UK’s Top Art Award, the Turner Prize, Won by Architecture Project for Derelict Houses



  • The UK’s Turner Prize for 2015 has been won by Assemble, a collective group of architects that has restored derelict houses.
  • The Turner is the leading award in British contemporary art, and arguably Europe’s most prestigious contemporary visual art prize, and Assemble is its first winner from the architecture and design field.
  • Alex Farquharson, director of Nottingham Contemporary, has been appointed the new director of Tate Britain.
  • Assemble was nominated both for this “Granby Four Streets” project as well as others.
  • The total prize pool for the Turner is £40,000 (about $60,300).

Riba investigates architect’s allegations of institutional racism



  • To my great pride my citation for my OBE was as chair of the Society of Black Architects.
  • The Royal Institute of British Architects has launched an investigation into allegations of institutional racism made by a leading architect and member of its national council.
  • Riba said it had appointed a QC and expert in the field to conduct an independent investigation into the claims.
  • Duncan, the Riba president, said in a statement that Owusu had written expressing her “dissatisfaction” and had alleged “that the election process may have been tainted by institutional racism”.
  • Racist and sexist discrimination runs through architecture “like a stick of rock”, and it starts at the top with Riba, Elsie Owusu has claimed.

October New Construction Spending Up 13% Year Over Year



  • Annually, the pace of multifamily spending rose 28% from the October 2014 estimate, and spending on single-family construction was 11% higher.
  • Construction spending in October was buoyed by a 0.8 percent rise in private spending, which touched its highest level since January 2008.
  • Construction spending has increased 13 percent in the past 12 months.
  • Single-family construction was up 1.6 percent to $226 billion while apartment construction rose 1.4 percent to $58 billion.
  • Construction spending has risen every month this year and is likely to support the economy in the final three months of the year as it deals with the strong dollar and energy cuts.

Construction Spending Rose 1.0 Percent in October



  • Spending on residential construction increased by 1.0% to USD399.0 billion, and spending on non-residential construction rose by 0.6% to USD403.4 billion.
  • The Commerce Department said construction spending rose 1% to the highest level it since December 2007.
  • Together, total private residential spending was up 1.0%, suggesting better Q4 residential investment growth than we had previously expected.
  • Offsetting this, private nonresidential construction spending was a bit below our expectation in October and trimmed our estimate of structures investment.
  • The report said construction spending climbed 1.0 percent to an annual rate of $1.107 trillion in October from the revised September estimate of $1.097 trillion.

  • The aptly named software is an extension for Autodesk Advance Steel 2016 which can be downloaded for free.

ArandaLasch adds pleated concrete facade to Tom Ford store



  • US firm Aranda\Lasch has completed a store for fashion designer Tom Ford in the Miami Design District, featuring an angular facade that references bold Art Deco motifs (+ slideshow).
  • Robins, co-founder of the Design Miami fair, is turning the area into a neighbourhood dedicated to fashion, design, architecture and dining spaces.
  • Inside the Tom Ford store, menswear and womenswear are split up over the two floors.
  • The architecture studio – which recently designed looping Railing chairs made of metal pipes for Design Miami – referenced patterns and shapes typical on the Art Deco-period architecture around Miami in its design for building’s facade.
  • “Inspired by the pleated Art Deco patterns found in architecture and fashion, the facade is given a texture that revives the exuberance and ornament of Miami’s golden era,” the studio told Dezeen.
